Make a future

An employment hub for everyone

I led the re-design of Make a Future online job board – the largest job board for the public educational sector in British Columbia.

The team’s objective was to seamlessly connect job seekers with available opportunities. We made sure that the website had a friendly tone and was easy to use.

What teachers want

As the major job board for teachers in British Columbia, the old site was lacking in many ways. There was no clear call to action, headings on pages were ambiguous, and the site did not cater for mobile users.

We ensure that a prominent call to action was introduced to the primary navigation, and designed with responsive in mind.

A better way to navigate

With over 15 regions and 90 school districts, being able to quickly navigate on both mobile and desktop was very important. The new navigation was optimised to be simpler and easier to read.

Using a combination of custom google maps and text links, users can visually navigate to a region. Once users are within a region, they are then presented with the appropriate listing of districts. This function worked well for both desktop and mobile users.

To make sure users can quickly jump to and from different sections of the site I introduced a fixed header, which shrinks and takes up less space as the user scrolls.

Promoting the districts

Each district page was given a complete overhaul, to improve on the look and feel of the valuable information they provided. A better structure and grid provided a consistent framework, while still giving each district the flexibility to show their custom logos, media and content.

Users could also navigate the content on the page with the provided ‘quick links’, as well as back and forth between regions. Of course, jobs were still high on the priority list, and these were highlighted at the top of each page.

Putting faces to opportunities

The new website is fresh and easy to read. Using the brand primary colours as highlights on a very clean look and feel, I was able to balance legibility with personality. We wanted to move away from photography to market the service, to create something truly unique.

We also highlighted that the educational sector hires from all professions for the education board. This was best presented with a custom illustration, which created a unique online presence and also served a very functional purpose.

This is a unique website which will require a more modern browser to work!
